Title - Carlisle - The Gateway To Scotland.
Location - Carlisle, Cumbria, England.
Artist - Maurice William Greiffenhagen R.A. (1862–1931).
Description - A knight on horseback in full armour, bearing the standard of St George. According to the LMS's own publication at the time, it suggests the medieval romance of castles, walled cities, tournaments, troubadours, jongleurs etc. Carlisle Castle's entrance gateway complete with portcullis were the gateway to the north, and is used to suggest the vision of Scottish mountains, glens and islands across the River Eden to the north of the city. In the modern world the traveller would use an LMS train rather than a horse. This is one of the LMS (London Midland & Scottish Railway) from their Royal Academicians series from 1924.
