Description - Medieval York in the 1960s. A wonderful depiction of the bustle of The Shambles, the most famous street in the city, with it's overhanging timber buildings, some dating back as far as the 14th century. The poster was originally issued in 1962, but British Rail re-used it after the branding change of 1965, so this example shows the British Rail logo at the bottom.

More About The Artist:
Alan Carr Linford was born in Doncaster, where he studied at the School of Art, moving on to the Royal College of Art (1943-47) where he gained the Prix de Rome and two years study at The British School in Rome. He became an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers when he was 20, and he was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society when he was 23.
Portrait painter Sir Edward Halliday showed a portfolio of his work to Princess Elizabeth (as The Queen then was) and the Duke of Edinburgh at Clarence House. The drawings were views of the Thames and the Royal couple were so pleased with what they saw that they acquired four, commissioned ten, and bought six. This patronage launched Carr Linford's career and many commissions followed, including twenty-four river paintings for the Royal Yacht Britannia and further paintings of Windsor, which hang in the private apartments at Windsor castle. The Sultan of Oman commissioned a series of huge paintings of Oman and the artist rose to the challenge with great aplomb.
He also produced a small number of railway posters during the British Railways years.
