Description - A GWR (Great Western Railway) poster produced just after the 1932 consecration of the new abbey. The new build took 30 years and produced the Gothic-Roman building which is there today, as part of the active Benedictine monastery. It replaced an original Cistercian Abbey on the same site which was destroyed following the Dissolution in 1539. In Buckle's depiction, the abbey is seen amongst the trees, with the rolling hills leading to Dartmoor in the distance behind it.

More About The Artist:
Claude Henry Buckle was born in London in 1905. He trained as an architect, but turned to art in 1928. He produced commissioned artwork for the new nuclear power stations around the country in the 1950s, and was a close friend of Terence Cuneo. He was a painter in oils and watercolour, particularly of marine subjects, and was prolific in his production of artwork for railway posters. He produced posters for GWR, LMS, SR & BR.
