Title - Discover New Worlds.
Location - South Kensington Museums, London, England.
Artist - Janusz Olszewski (1944-).
Description - This poster is to encourage travel by Underground to the South Kensington museums.
It is one of the "Art on the Underground" series of posters which ran from 1986 to 2000, concentrating on fine art, rather than poster design. The artists were given a free hand without outside influence on the resulting work of art, unlike the commercial art route to advertising. The only specification was that all places had to be accessible by Underground, and the resulting posters were never considered advertisements, but as good decoration for the stations, a passenger benefit and a way of continuing the Underground's long history of responsibility towards art and heritage.
This is a huge poster - "Four sheet" or "Double Quad" is the descriptive size for posters that are 60 x 40 inches. It is four times bigger than a "Double Crown"; this is the largest standard poster format, and was the most commonly used size for Art on the Underground posters, to showcase the quality of the art.
