John Cooke was born in 1929. He graduated from Stoke-on-Trent College of Art with a National Diploma in Design, having specialised in oil painting. He taught in East Anglia, then moved to Yorkshire in 1976 and set up a studio in Dent. He is best known for his expressive and often haunting landscapes, particularly of Dentdale and the Lake District, experimenting with a variety of media and his work has been exhibited widely. Many of his paintings have been used commercially, including Shell, Reader's Digest, London Transport and Penguin Books.
