Description - A famous painting, by a famous artist.
In May 1964, Cuneo visited the Welsh narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway to make sketches and take photographs for what was to become the painting of trains passing at Tan-y-Bwlch, which was to be re-produced in many forms on posters during the 1960s. It was carefully staged with ex-Penrhyn Quarry Railway Hunslet 'Linda' waiting at the top points with an up train while double Fairlie 'Merddin Emrys' arrives with a down train. As the line above Tan-y-Bwlch was still awaiting re-opening in 1964, this was a symbolic image to show the resolve to continue with the re-opening of the line despite the C.E.G.B. reservoir blocking the line at Tan-y-Grisiau, and then also to celebrate the 100th anniversary of it's first passenger trains.
This version of the poster was released with the overprinted section of wording regarding the Centenary.

Terence Cuneo was a hugely accomplished artist, born in London, the son of artists. There is a wealth of his original work in various museums, including many war works, his railways work and his official artwork for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. His works and posters produced from them are highly collectable around the world. He was awarded the OBE, was a CVO, and his life-size statue is to be seen at London's Waterloo Station.
