Artist - Sir Henry George Rushbury R.A. (1889-1968).
Description - This is a fabulous detailed depiction of Fountains Abbey, now part of the World Heritage Site with the Studley Royal Water Gardens, is a few miles outside Ripon. The picturesque ruins are Grade 1 listed and our best example of a large Cistercian Abbey, having built around 1125, and in use until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII.
This poster was also re-issued by British Railways a few years later, following nationalisation.
This poster is one of a collection saved by a railwayman who worked at Carlisle station from the 1940s to the 1960s. The poster was never used and is in basically the same condition as originally received at the station for display.

More About The Artist:
Henry Rushbury was born in Birmingham, studied at Birmingham College of Art, and later moved to London. He was a watercolour artist, and etcher and draughtsman, specialising in architectural subjects. Member of the RWS from 1926, made CVO in 1955, CBE in 1960 and KCVO in 1964. Produced a number of posters for the LMS, LNER and BR.
