Description - This is an unusual painting style for Cooper, and he uses warm colours to suggest evening sun on the local stone. A stylish 1930s couple are walking past what is now the Royal Pump Room Museum, across the road from the Valley Gardens. At the time it housed the active suplphur well and would have been busy during the summer months with well-to-do customers drinking the waters at outside tables early in the morning. Passers-by could also drink water from a free tap outside the building at any time.

Austin Cooper settled in London in 1922, and started his poster designing career with his first commission from London Transport, for whom he produced a lot of work. He later produced works for the LNER, and for the Empire Marketing Board. In 1943 he moved on to become a full time painter.
