Description - Buckle's wonderful oil painting of oast houses in springtime gives us the essence of rural Kent as it used to be. Oast houses were a common sight near the hop gardens all across Kent, for drying the hops which were then used for brewing beer. This version of the poster was produced for the North American market, as can be seen from the wording at the bottom.

Claude Henry Buckle was born in London in 1905. He trained as an architect, but turned to art in 1928. He produced commissioned artwork for the new nuclear power stations around the country in the 1950s, and was a close friend of Terence Cuneo. He was a painter in oils and watercolour, particularly of marine subjects, and was prolific in his production of artwork for railway posters. He produced posters for GWR, LMS, SR & BR.
