Description - A detailed depiction of the stone architecture of the only English medieval cathedral that has three spires. The ornate front is the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott. This is one of a series of Cathedral posters which British Railways re-issued in 1948, having previously been produced in the 1930s by the LMS The others are Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester.
This poster is one of a collection saved by a railwayman who worked at Carlisle station from the 1940s to the 1960s. The poster was never used and is in the same condition as originally received at the station for display.

Claude Henry Buckle was born in London in 1905. He trained as an architect, but turned to art in 1928. He produced commissioned artwork for the new nuclear power stations around the country in the 1950s, and was a close friend of Terence Cuneo. He was a painter in oils and watercolour, particularly of marine subjects, and was prolific in his production of artwork for railway posters. He produced posters for GWR, LMS, SR & BR.
