Artist - Jack Merriott (1901-1968).
Description - Towan Beach, with "The house in the Sea" (now called "The Island") and it's own private suspension bridge, with the bays of north Cornwall stretching into the distance. On the next small headland, above Great Western beach, is the Great Western Hotel (the Railway's hotel, owned by British Transport Hotels at the time). Wind surfers are on the sea and people are spead around the beaches. Surfing of one form or another has always featured on posters for Newquay, and it is often referred to as Surf City UK, while the miles of golden sands always attracts families.

Jack Merriott was a landscape and portrait painter, who used both oil and watercolour media. He lectured widely, wrote and illustrated related books, and was vice president of the RI. He produced artwork for quite a number of railway posters.
