Description - A detailed view of the interior of a paper mill, showing how huge sheets of white paper come magically out of what looks like a large steamy bath. Through the window, open wagons are being loaded or unloaded and a green steam locomotive is visible behind them.
This poster is one of a collection saved by a railwayman who worked at Carlisle station from the 1940s to the 1960s. The poster was never used and is in the same condition as originally received at the station for display.

More About The Artist:
Ellis Silas was born in London in 1885. His father was an artist and designer and his mother an opera singer.
He sailed for Australia in 1907, enlisted for war in 1914, landed at Galipoli in 1915 and was discharged medically unfit in 1916 with shell shock, gradually recovering in England. After the war his wartime diary and sketchbook were published.
He returned to Australia in 1921 to work as a commercial artist, then finally returned to England 1925. As well as marine and war paintings, he illustrated books, designed posters and was commissioned by shipping companies to execute works to hang in their ocean liners.
