Description - Selby Abbey is one of England's largest parish churches, dating back to 1069. Most of the Abbey was demolished after Henry VIII closed it in 1539, but the main church survived, and the church tower is Norman. It also features the Washington Window, said to be the basis of the Stars & Stripes design.
This poster is one of a collection saved by a railwayman who worked at Carlisle station from the 1940s to the 1960s. The poster was never used and is in basically the same condition as originally received at the station for display.

Kenneth Steel was born in Sheffield, and studied at Sheffield College of Art.
He was a painter in oils and watercolour, and a printmaker and engraver. He produced a large number of railway posters and carriage prints for British Railways.
