Description - The famous 16th century bridge crossing the River Tees at Barnard Castle is the visual centre of the poster, and the ruins of the Norman castle are just visible above the river to the left. The two people in the foreground provide some great personal interest to a wonderful artistic composition. The town's final railway link was closed in 1964, from Darlington through Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Jack Merriott was a landscape and portrait painter, who used both oil and watercolour media. He lectured widely, wrote and illustrated related books, and was vice president of the RI. He produced artwork for quite a number of railway posters.
